Helpful Hint: Bow Pins Guidelines
Drill the bow hole just slightly over the pin stock diameter. The pin will be less likely to slip out. Choosing the correct pin for a bow is important. If a large hole is drilled into a narrow bow, it will weaken the bow shaft. We carry three sizes of traditional bow pins. We recommend:
Small pins – 4” and 5” bows Medium pins – 6” and 7” bows Large pins – 8” and larger bows

Ox Britchen
(Also called breeching)
Our britchens are made of nylon straps. The spider pad and the britchen strap are made of biothane.
All hardware is chrome plated. The spider ring has built in hooks for hanging the traces.
The hip drop straps, the britchen strap, and the forward side straps are adjustable.
Unlike a horse britchen harness, where the hip drop straps are attached to a common ring at the spider, the ox britchen drop straps are designed to pass on each side of the ox’s large hip bones.
The forward side strap fastens to the rings on the ox yoke.
All ox britchens include a pair of nylon/biothane lazy straps. These are quite handy particularly during groundwork. The traces are passed through the lazy strap loop. This keeps them from dragging on the ground and from getting tangled on the legs.
Most of our customers make their own traces using chain, but we can order custom made traces upon request.
Britchens are most often used when single draft animals or teams are pulling a wheeled implement or a sled (during winter conditions). While descending the hill, the weight of the load will come up against the rear of the animal rather than the yoke. Working cattle that have horns can be trained to hold back great loads during descent without a britchen. However, the britchen significantly increases the ability to hold back a load, as well as increases traction and comfort.
Our britchens come in three sizes:
Small (for cattle weighing up to 1,000 lbs) $185.00
Medium (for cattle weighing 1,000 to 2,000 lbs) $205.00
Large (for cattle weighing 2,000 lbs & up) $225.00

In Praise of Oxen, by Terry James
"If you have ever heard the sound of ox-bells, you are likely to remember them forever." Oxen - powerful, intelligent and versatile animals - have for centuries been molded to conform with human needs: from logging, farming, and hauling freight to performing in exhibitions, parades and ox-pulls. The story of oxen as beasts of burden, however, encompasses much more than mere animal husbandry. It is the story of a unique relationship between the ox owner and his team; a relationship which expresses itself as an entire way of life.
Terry James' photographs illuminate this way of life by offering an impressive variety of images that capture the essential qualities of these adaptable animals, and the confidence and pride they instill in their owners. The photographs are richly complemented by tributes from the ox owners themselves, accentuating the oxen culture that has emerged over time. Together, text and images evoke a time and a way of life that is fast disappearing.
In Praise of Oxen celebrates the humble oxen and the proud people who own them.
Hardcover, used in very good condition.

Ox-Cart Man, by Donald Hall
Thus begins a lyrical journey through the days and weeks, the months, and the changing seasons in the life of one New Englander and his family. The oxcart man packs his goods - the wool from his sheep, the shawl his wife made, the mittens his daughter knitted, and the linen they wove. He packs the birch brooms his son carved, and even a bag of goose feathers from the barnyard geese.
He travels over hills, through valleys, by streams, past farms and villages. At Portsmouth Market he sells his goods, one by one - even his beloved ox. Then, with his pockets full of coins, he wanders through the market, buying provisions for his family, and returns to his home. And the cycle begins again.
