Nick’s Blacksmithing.

“A small shop with a big hearth.”
Growing up in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, I gained an appreciation for the traditions and values that take root in the area.  Among these traditions are working with oxen and blacksmithing.  Having grown up on a farm, I had oxen of my own and worked with them in the fields, woods and at local fairs.

My grandfather was a blacksmith and worked with draft animals his whole life.  When the time came he passed on the art of blacksmithing to me, and with that came a wealth of knowledge.  I then traveled around the province to learn skills from other smiths to use in making my own oxen gear.  I made my first shoes when I was 15 and have never looked back.

I make my ox shoes the old way – by taking a piece of steel, heating it, and using a hammer and anvil to work the steel into the desired form.  This I find makes the best quality of shoe.

The most popular shoes I make are for pulling at fairs and working in the field, but I also offer rear shoes that are used for working in the woods (the corks on the toe are set back so that when the ox steps they do not pull off the front shoe).  These are not kept in stock, but are available upon request.

All nail holes are punched by hand, are fitted for number 5 regular head nails and come in sizes 4, 4 ½, 4 ¾,  and 5.  Larger sizes are available upon request.

Please call or email with any question you may have, and look us up on Facebook .  If you are ever in the area, feel free to stop in for a cup of tea or coffee - visitors are always welcome!

**If only front *or* back shoes are needed, just ask (price is cut in half).
